One tile holds one உயிர்மெய் letter — a consonant carrying its vowel. மலர் is three tiles: ம · ல · ர். A bare consonant marked with a புள்ளி is one tile too, because that is one letter.
Every guess is answered colour by colour: green where a tile is exactly right, gold where the tile belongs in the word but not in that place, and grey where it does not belong at all. Six guesses, one word a day, and the same word for everyone playing in Tamil that day — it is generated from the date, not fetched from a server, so it is the same on every device and it works with no connection.
The half-coloured tile
This is the part no letter-based word game can do. Because a tile holds a consonant and a vowel sign, it can be right about one and wrong about the other — and it says so.
You guessed கி, the answer has கு. The tile comes back half coloured: the consonant க is in the right place, its vowel sign is not. One guess, and you have learned something a letter-based game could not have told you.
The order of precedence never changes: a whole correct akshara beats a correct consonant, which beats a correct vowel sign, which beats a letter that is merely present somewhere else in the word. One tile is only ever in one state, so the board can always be read at a glance.
What is different about Tamil
Tamil has no aspirated series and very few stacked conjuncts, so its letters are unusually clean to split into consonant and vowel — which makes the half-coloured tile more informative here than in almost any other Indian script. The grantha letters ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ are on the keyboard for words that need them.
The keyboard and the word list
The keyboard composes aksharas the way an Indian keyboard does — pick a consonant, then its vowel sign, with a live preview of the letter you are building and a backspace that removes the vowel before it removes the consonant. Keys that cannot legally come next are disabled rather than hidden, so the layout never moves under your thumb. You can also type by roman spelling if you prefer.
The Tamil answer list comes from subtitle-frequency data cut to three and four letters, then checked by hand against a dictionary. Easy is a three-letter word, Hard is four.
