Pot the next letter of the word and it locks in. Pot a black ball and the round is over, which turns the table into a positional problem: where the cue ball comes to rest matters as much as whether the pot goes down.
Three things that help
- Play for position, not for the pot. A letter potted into a table where the next one is unreachable has cost you the round.
- Use the cushions. A ball tight against a rail is usually easier off two cushions than straight on.
- Look at the blacks before you aim, not after. The dangerous shot is the one where the cue ball rolls on into one.

Do I need to know snooker?
No. Aim, power, release is the whole control scheme, and the rules that matter here are the word's order rather than snooker's frame scoring.
What do the black balls do?
Potting one ends the round, so they are obstacles rather than points.
